Society
The Fortune Academy, a.k.a. "the Castle," is a
62-bed residence in Harlem for homeless
individuals with criminal records. Since
opening its doors in April 2002, the Castle has
been heralded as an exemplar in its field by the
Urban Institute, AIDS Housing of Washington, and
the U.S. Department of Justice. The
Castle's community room, which seats 100, will be
the site of this exciting event.
Thos Shipley, winner of the 1996 MAC Jazz
Vocalist Award, is equally at home in the
most intimate international jazz clubs and
on Broadway. His musical journey began when
Leslie Uggams discovered him singing in
Atlanta. He has since starred in the smash
Broadway hit, Miss
Saigon, and headlined
at the Weill, the Spoleto Festival USA, and
Carnegie Hall. Proceeds from
his Concert at the Castle will go to
the
David Rothenberg Center--the public policy and
advocacy wing of The Fortune
Society.
Come hear amazing music and see the good work of
The Fortune Society!

Romantic Jazz for a Summer Evening: The "Ultra suede" Thos Shipley with Jerome Harris '73 8:00 PM
See the Club's Main Dining Room transformed into New York's most elegant and romantic jazz club, starring the incomparable Thos Shipley. The winner of five MAC Awards as Outstanding Jazz Vocalist, Shipley is one of the most exciting performers around. Harper's Bazaar called him "a link in the line of charismatic performers from Nat King Cole to Al Jarreau. Vocals — ultrasuede; scat — undulating; funk — sleek." The New York Post called him "awesomely talented," and Variety described him as "smooth, mellow, velvet-rich, playful."
Thos Shipley sings at the intersection of jazz and theater. He is the lyric scorer, delivering a song, with sophisticated jazz chops, arrangements, and a golden voice that repaints the lyric as a great soundtrack does cinema.
Shipley will be joined by his all-star trio, featuring a Harvard Club favorite, bassist Jerome Harris '73. Harris has appeared on more than 50 recordings, performing with such jazz greats as Sonny Rollins and Jack DeJohnette.
There will be no service in the Main Dining Room once the performance begins, so be sure to arrive early enough to allow plenty of time to be served. This is going to be a very special evening and a real highlight of the summer for everyone who is lucky enough to attend.
Performance is open to club members only
